So, welcome to 2013 and the first blog of the New(ish) Year.  Hopefully you are all adapting to being back at classes following festive indulgence.

I know that if there is one thing that bugs our Graham about the New Year, it is the empty promises and the unrealistic expectations dished out by the ‘diet’ industry to those of us who want to get fit and lose a bit of weight.  Remember folks, getting fit is not about eating only grapefruit for 2 weeks.  Getting healthy is not about missing out major food groups or blending everything you eat into a mucky pulp.  It is no mystery.....eat healthy food and come to class!  No, it may not always be easy and yes, you will sweat a bit and get a bit out of puff.  I can however, guarantee that rather than feeling deprived, grumpy and hungry, you will have fun, make friends and feel great.

I am certainly feeling the benefit of a couple of classes combined with a once a week Personal Training session to concentrate on strength work.  The difference has been amazing and the one-to-one classes ensure that the tailor made workouts are specific to my recent injury problems and adapted to my own personal strengths and weaknesses.  Personal Training is definitely something to consider if anyone wants to concentrate on a certain discipline or if the times of OF do not always suit your routine.  It is also worth remembering that PT lessons can also be given as a gift to someone who fancies increasing their exercise levels but are perhaps not quite ready to take the leap into the deep end of the OF pool.  Remember this when you are huffing and puffing around the park tonight....uttering the occasional sweary word at Graham and Mark.....the wind and the rain.....the mud in your hair....the sweat in your eyes....think of that experience in a gift voucher for the one you love...Happy Valentine’s Day! :-)

Well fellow OF'ers the great day beckons and it is going to be immense!  Saturday the 15th is going to be the best day of the Christmas period......the 16th may not seem quite so good and for the older OF'ers amongst us even the 17th may be a bit of a struggle.....but the 15th is going to be AWESOME so let's focus on that for the time being!

Start your Christmas festivities with the world famous Santa Hat Saturday this weekend.  Class will be on at 10am in Queens Park as usual but we need you to come along and bring some festive cheer to proceedings.  Wear a Santa hat....Christmas outfit or anything festive....we have had our fair share of interesting Christmas outfits in the past: elves, The Snowman, Mrs Claus.....and last year the lovely Louise dressed up as......hmmmmm....how shall I put it....'alternative' Santa!

Then home to recover and get your glad rags on for the best Christmas night out of the year...every year...the OF Christmas Party.  This year it will be from about 7pm at Clydesdale Cricket Club in the Soutside and for the price of £15, you will get a great night out, some high quality food, reasonable bar prices and the award ceremony the Oscars wishes it could be....The Grahammies.  The committee has been working really hard to put together a fun presentation and the worthy shall be awarded.....get your money in by Thursday to secure your place.

I personally am looking forward to some humiliating photos and great stories.....why would this year be any different? :-)

Let's face it folks....Summer is over!  There is nothing we can do about and we may as well embrace it.  I am just back from a great OF class at Bellahouston tonight and after a sneaky wee holiday in Spain, I could not believe how dark the evening was.  I LOVE it!  There is something brilliant about Winter classes.  You may drag yourself there like a condemned prisoner but I guarantee you will bounce home with the energy of a child. The parks belong to us alone on these dark nights.  While others cower under blankets and talk about the nights fair drawin' in, we OFers go out and meet the Winter head on.

I am pretty sure that there have been times when after a long day at work and that cup of tea, the thought of going out there is really less than inviting.....the horizontal rain drives you inside and the wind taunts you!  When you feel like that, just imagine how amazing you will feel in an hour's time when you have been running around, getting more than a bit manky and having a brilliant laugh with your fellow crazies!  Trust me....OF is great at any time of year but battling the elements is an amazing feeling...AND from a personal point of view.....no one can see my beer belly under all these layers.....yaldy!

Winter also brings the OF Christmas extravaganza.  It is on Saturday the 15th December at Clydesdale Cricket Club on the Southside.  Details will be made available as soon as possible.  For anyone who has not attended this before, I can honestly say that it is not to be missed.  It is without a doubt my favourite Christmas night of the year.  We will have the traditional and hotly contested OF Awards Ceremony.  The Committee have already been planning the presentation...and yes I am corruptible....so keep the date free and we will let you know the plans as we work them all out.

In the meantime, I am off for  a shower!

Following on from our previous post about kids at OF, I am delighted to share a success story with you all.  Alfie Logan is pictured having just completed his first Scottish Schools Run.  Alfie managed to run the entire 3K event and it is no surprise to find that he regularly attends OF classes with Mum, Mairi.  Many congratulations Alfie!! Who knows, you could be the new Tom McKean in the making....

If anyone would like their acheivements heralded on the blog then please drop some details and a picture (if possible) to Graham and we will include in future blogs.

Believe it or not we are also preparing the presentation for the Christmas night out on Saturday 15th December and I am in the process of compiling photographs representing another great year for Outside Fitness....any photos or ideas you have for the night would be appreciated as we are trying to include as many people as possible.

I also promise (in writing!) to blog more often!! :-)

As some of you may know it is along held OF tradition to get the old Newsletter to as many exotic places as possible. We have had photos from OFers all over the world including Tokyo, Dubai, New York and even Arran....is there nowhere we cannae go?
Many thanks to Mark and Lucy who took time out of their romantic trip to Venice to get this photograph taken.  I am wondering whether Mark was taking this photo or whether there was a long and complicated explanation to someone who had no idea what they were talking about.  I can hear it now...."OK we do this exercise class...in the parks of Glasgow....and yes, this is the Dr Love tribute editon....and yes, she is a real Doctor...no, not of love...if you could just take the photo grazie!"
So thanks folks...and for anyone else going on holiday while we have mourned the passing of the old Newsletter, we would love to see pictures of your holidays...we can print off a copy of the NL for you to take with you (Dr Love tribute copy on special request only :-)) or even wear one of Graham's bibs....but dont forget to bring it back!
A few of us are heading off this weekend for a week of drinking..ahem......I mean cycling our way around Lake Constance....and we will of course remember our OF pledge to get suitably embarrassing photos...but it would be great to see some new faces in the photos and we at OFHQ love a good holiday story!  So until next time....Bon Voyage!
CHIEF Ed

I realise that for many of you the timing of this post will be all wrong, given the fact that most kids return to school next week after the 'summer' break (I use that term loosely) and the parents of Scotland breathe a huge sigh of relief!
However, it is always worth remembering that no one is too young to start joining in some OF activities and kids are welcome at classes.  Who know what sort of a hero could be lurking under those hoodies and  converse boots?  As we all know, the atmosphere at class is one of calming agony and who would not want to share that with the wee ones...?
I must however, clarify that OF is not a creche and Graham and OF cannot take responsibility for our budding Olympians.
So there goes another excuse for not making it to class: babysitting or parenting, let's spread the lactic acid around!

Welcome to the brand new Outside Fitness website!  No one is more excited than me, the CHIEF Ed that I can share my thoughts and musings with my fellow OFers....
While the Newsletter served us well in getting information out to everyone, we at OFHQ felt it was time we freshened things up.  As classes have grown in numbers both in the Southside and the West End, it has become difficult keep a track of some the amazing accomplishments you wonderful people are acheiving!  If you are running a 10K (or shuffling a la CHIEF Ed ....there's a reason I do the writing you know!) or raising money for charity or if you just fancy getting a few people together for a hillwalk, a cycle or heaven forbid..a beer then why not use ths platform to reach out to fellow minded crazies?
Also, anyone who has photos of OFers then send them in - if you are doing an event or remembered to take your Newsletter on holiday then pop the photo through cyber post to us.  I do have a couple of photos to upload but I am still getting to grips with the new set up so please be patient....also as the Newsletter in the old format disappears into the horizon, how else can you personalise that whole OF holiday experience?  (or humiliate yourself on holiday depending on how you look at it)....perhaps pack a bib with you and wear it while climbing everest, taming wild horses in the Grand Canyon....or lying on a beach in Ibiza..we really appreciate your input as not only does it mean we can laugh at you but it also ensures we have plenty of ideas and photos for the OF Grahammy Awards come Christmas.  I, and the other members of the Christmas Commttiee are determind to start working on the presentation earlier than ever this year and give ourselves more than 48 hours to sort it out.....so please, give generously..
Once I am sure this has worked I will be jotting down a few words here and there....and I am sure it will all go swimmingly!
I hope to see you all at a class soon.....bring your 'A game'!
Now, where is the 'publish' button?
